The first thing you think of when you hear a game has been a blowout is offence. But in this case, defence may have been the difference for the winners.

The Timmins Majors were in Kapuskasing Friday night to take on the Flyers. And both teams had little trouble finding the net. However, only one club discovered how to put the puck past the goal line.

Netminder Joshua Gauthier was solid for Timmins, turning back more than 30 shots. It was the difference between a shootout and a blowout. The Majors peppered the Kapuskasing goal with more than 40 shots, enroute to a 10-3 win.

"Ya, he made some good saves for us," agrees Majors' manager Rick Schonfeldt of Gauthier.

Timmins managed the only goal in the first period when Brock Riva found the back of the net. Bruno Colontonio assisted.

The Majors would then blow things wide open in the second. Derek Viskovich made it 2-0 with the help of Micheal Therien and Kellen Morin. After Kap got on the board, Therien restored the two-goal bulge with his first of three on the night. Kory Cashaback drew the assist. The Flyers pulled within one goal again before Colontonio made it 4-2. Brad Norkum assisted. Norkum then helped set up Jamie Collins for a shorthanded goal that may have put the game away, giving the Majors a 5-2 lead. Therien made it 6-2 before the end of the period with Jason Robin drawing the lone assist.

Kellen Morin opened the final period with an unassisted marker and it was 7-2. Therien completed his hattrick with the 8th goal for Timmins. Kashaback from Norkum ran the score to 9-3, and Mario Lavigne scored his first goal of the season with the help of fellow rookie Eric Carriere to finish the route.

"The shots were close (but) I think we dominated the game," offers Schonfeldt.

Timmins now begins a long stretch of games on home ice. And, it begins Saturday night (October 1.) The Majors will host the Rayside-Balfour Sabrecats. Gametime at the McIntyre Arena is 7:30. It is the first of 5 straight home games for the Majors, who are now 2-and-1 to start the 2005-2006 season.

Majors Give Away Win

The Timmins Majors will play at least three games this weekend. And after their game Friday, there may not be anymore. The triple-A midget hockey team is competing at the annual Ajax/ Pickering Early Bird Tournament. The tourney features clubs from around the Toronto region. Timmins opened against Brampton.

"We just gave away the win," exclaimed Bill Monahan, Majors' head coach.

Brampton is not viewed to be one of the stronger teams taking part. But the Majors failed to capitalize, instead choosing to play undisciplined.

"We played far too individually," explains Monahan, "and we paid for it."

Things started fine for Timmins. Kory Cashaback opened the scoring, with Brock Riva assisting. After the Battalion tied the game, Kellen Morin put the Majors back on top. Jamie Collins and Derek Viskovich drew the assists. Morin then potted another, with Viskovich and Kevin Berthiaume assisting, and the Majors appeared in control.

But that's when it all fell apart. The Majors continued to take too many risks, and giveaway the puck. Brampton responded with three straight goals, and took the lead.

"Their second goal," describes Rick Schonfeldt, Majors' manager, "kinda took away our momentum."

The goal came while the Battalion was shorthanded. Brampton had iced the puck but it ricochetted off a Majors' stick and into the open net.

Timmins did manage to fight back and tie the game at four on a Brock Riva unassisted goals. The game would end 4-4.

"Our guys got a wake-up talking to after the game," stated an unimpressed Bill Monahan.

The Majors are off until Saturday morning when they take on the Mississauga Ice Dogs. Timmins will also play the host Ajax/ Pickering Raiders. That game goes late Saturday evening.

There are eight triple-A midget teams competing in the novice to midget tournament.
